If you are planning a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, you are in for a treat! This city is an incredible mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. I recently spent two amazing days in Edinburgh and fell in love with its charm, and now I am excited to share my perfect 2-day Edinburgh itinerary with you! From wandering charming neighborhoods to hiking up volcanic hills and discovering magical spots, here is your ultimate guide to experiencing Edinburgh in 48 hours.

One of my favorite things about Edinburgh is how walkable it is! You can easily explore the city on foot, allowing you to wander through its charming streets and stumble upon hidden shops and restaurants that might not be on your itinerary.

That said, this entire 2-day Edinburgh itinerary is doable on foot; I did it myself and loved every minute! Walking lets you soak in the city’s vibe at your own pace. However, if you would prefer to give your feet a break or want to get to a destination a bit quicker, there are plenty of buses available that conveniently take you to all the popular spots. Whether you choose to walk or hop on a bus, this itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your time in this beautiful city.

So, if you are ready to explore Edinburgh’s mix of old and new, grab your walking shoes, and let’s explore!

2-Day Edinburgh Itinerary

Day 1: Discovering History and Scenic Hikes

Morning: Local Coffee Shop

Start your morning with your beverage of choice and a delicious pastry. Edinburgh has so many coffee shops to choose from. Stop into one of the many independent cafรฉs. A few recommendations include Lannan Bakery, Fortitude, The Milkman, Thomas J Walls Coffee, Wellington Coffee, Burr & Co., and Cairngorm Coffee. You cannot go wrong though, all of these spots offer the perfect blend of delicious coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.

Mid-Morning: Stroll Through Dean Village and Circus Lane

After fueling up, head to Dean Village, a tranquil and picturesque area just a short walk from the city center. With its quaint cobbled streets and charming historic buildings, this area is straight out of a fairy tale and the perfect place for a stroll.

I had sent my mom some photos from Dean Village/Circus Lane and her exact response was โ€œWow, itโ€™s like a storybook quaint town!โ€

From there, make your way to Circus Lane, one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful streets. The adorable houses with their ivy-covered walls and flower boxes fill you with awe. It is a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle you will encounter later.

These areas are a great introduction to Edinburgh to see the stunning architecture unfold before your eyes.

Afternoon: Old Town Walking Tour

Next, head to Old Town to wander the historic streets and explore iconic landmarks like the Royal Mile (a mile-long street between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace), Victoria Steet, St Gilesโ€™ Cathedral, and the Grassmarket. The narrow alleyways, known as “closes,” are filled with stories of the city’s past.

I would highly recommend joining a guided tour of this area to understand the history behind Edinburgh and its famous landmarks. Having a tour guide can also be a great way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the summer crowds in Edinburgh. They can expertly navigate the busy streets and help you find quieter spots amidst the hustle and bustle.

Lunch: Traditional Scottish Fare

For lunch, indulge in some traditional Scottish dishes. Stop by The Devil’s Advocate for haggis, neeps, and tatties, or George IV Bar for bangers and mash, or enjoy a hearty soup at Brewhemia.

Evening: Hiking Arthur’s Seat

Burn off that lunch with a hike up Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that offers panoramic views of the city. The climb is moderately challenging, as it is steep but worth every step. This was one of my favorite things to do in Edinburgh – I love a hike with a spectacular viewpoint! I could have stayed up there for hours analyzing each side of the 360-degree view.

Dinner: The Outsider Restaraunt

After your hike, reward yourself with dinner at The Outsider Restaurant. This chic restaurant offers a variety of delicious dishes, perfect for refueling after a busy day. The vibe is laid-back, the food is divine, and the cocktails are a great way to toast to an amazing first day!

Night: Drinks at the Whiski Rooms

End the night with a whisky tasting at the Whiski Rooms, where you can sample a selection of Scotland’s finest whiskies. The ambiance is cozy, and the staff are knowledgeable, making it a great place to unwind.

Reflect on your incredible first day in Edinburgh and know there is more fun to be had tomorrow!

Day 2: Exploring Castles, Culture, and Culinary Treats

Morning: Coffee Shop

Start your morning with another coffee shop. Again, here are some recommendations: Lannan Bakery, Fortitude, The Milkman, Thomas J Walls Coffee, Wellington Coffee, Burr & Co., and Cairngorm Coffee

Mid-Morning: Edinburgh Castle Tour

Your first activity of the day will be a visit to the iconic Edinburgh Castle. You have definitely caught glimpses of this historic fortress that dominates the city skyline from your day one exploration, but now it is time to explore it up close.

I recommend taking a guided tour through the castle (your entrance ticket will be included in the purchase of the tour). Edinburgh Castle might not be the most visually striking compared to other castles, but its history is rich and complex. A guided tour can provide insights that you might miss otherwise. After the tour, you can explore the castle grounds on your own if you would like. It is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your visit.

Make sure to book your tickets in advance, especially during the busy summer months, as tickets can sell out days in advance.

Lunch: Pork or Pizza?

For lunch, savor some slow-roasted, tender pork at Oink, a casual spot that is a must-try and has several locations around Edinburgh. Otherwise, Franco Manca offers amazing sourdough pizzas. Tough choice, right? Why not consider squeezing in two lunches if you are up for it?!

Afternoon: Exploring Leith

Next, head to Leith, Edinburgh’s vibrant waterfront district. This area has a unique blend of history and modern culture, with trendy shops, galleries, and cafes. Take a leisurely stroll along the Shore, enjoy the scenic views, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Dinner: DINING in Leith

For dinner, Leith has some fantastic options. If you are into seafood, try The Ship on the Shore. I ate there and loved it! The food was fresh and delicious, and the decor had a fun nautical vibe that added to the experience.

Or, if you are looking for something a bit more upscale, The Kitchin offers a Michelin-starred experience with a focus on seasonal Scottish ingredients. I wanted to try it myself, but they were fully booked when I was in town. Plus, I was trying to be a bit more budget-conscious on this trip.

Evening: Underground Vault and Ghost Tour

If you are up for a unique experience, check out an underground and ghost walking tour. Edinburgh is famous for its haunted history, and these tours give you a glimpse into the city’s spooky side. You will explore hidden vaults and hear eerie stories that you will not find in any guidebook. It is a fun (and kind of creepy) way to wrap up your day.

Ice Cream: Soft Core

You cannot visit Edinburgh without indulging in some ice cream, and Soft Core is an absolute must-try. I might have indulged in ice cream a few times during my trip, but this place really stood out. Their soft serve is heavenly, whether you go classic with vanilla or get adventurous with miso and caramel (both are delicious). Or, for an extra treat, do not miss out on their caramel crunch sundae which is fantastic! Plus, Soft Core is located in a lively area perfect for people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere.

If You Have More Time

Bonus Activity: Soccer Match

โ€‹โ€‹If you are a sports fan, catching a football (soccer) match is a fun activity. I attended a Hibs (Hibernian F.C.) match, and it was an unforgettable experience! Afterward, I enjoyed dinner at Cilantro, a cozy spot with a delicious fusion of Indian flavors. This was one of my favorite meals in Edinburgh!

Bonus Activity: Harry Potter Tour

For Harry Potter fans, Edinburgh is a magical destination. Join a Harry Potter-themed walking tour to see the spots that inspired J.K. Rowling, from the cafรฉ where she wrote the first book to real-life locations that resemble Diagon Alley and Hogwarts. It is a fun way to see the city for Harry Potter enthusiasts!
