Newport, Rhode Island, was one of those places that completely caught me off guard. I came for a wedding, not knowing what to expect, and left with a great appreciation for this charming coastal town. If you are looking for a weekend escape that balances relaxation, adventure, and plenty of delicious seafood, Newport should be on your list! Here is my ideal 2-day itinerary in Newport, Rhode Island.
2-Day Itinerary In Newport, RI
Day 1: Exploring Downtown Newport
Morning: Coffee at Nitro Bar
Kick-off day 1 or your 2-day itinerary in Newport with a caffeine boost at Nitro Bar. This trendy spot serves up delicious nitro cold brews, lattes, and pastries in a cozy setting. It is a small place and can get busy but I highly recommend this coffee shop to start your day.
Mid-Morning: Walk Around Town and Shopping
Newportโs downtown is a shopperโs dream, with charming boutiques, galleries, and unique shops around every corner. Take a leisurely stroll through the cobblestone streets, and pop into the little stores that catch your eye. While you are exploring, do not miss the International Tennis Hall of Fame. It is a fascinating stop that celebrates the history of tennis. You can stroll the beautiful grounds for free, where you will see the historic grass tennis courts and players dressed in classic white attire.
Lunch: Wallyโs Wieners
In the heart of many of the shops, take a break and stop for lunch at the casual Wallyโs Weiners. This spot serves gourmet hot dogs with a playful twist, perfect for a laid-back lunch.
Afternoon: The Cliff Walk and The Breakers
After lunch, it is time for one of Newportโs most iconic experiences: The Cliff Walk. This 3.5-mile path along the coast offers stunning ocean views on one side and Gilded Age mansions on the other.
A must-see along the Cliff Walk is The Breakers, the most magnificent of Newportโs mansions and the former summer home of the Vanderbilt family. If you are planning to visit just one mansion, make it this one. Each room is a jaw-dropping display of muraled ceilings, intricate woodwork, glittering chandeliers, and luxurious furnishings that will transport you back to the roaring 1920s, offering a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of America’s Gilded Age elite.
Dinner: The Mooring Seafood and Kitchen
For dinner, head to The Mooring, a Newport staple right on the waterfront. Their menu is packed with fresh seafood options, like oysters, shrimp cocktails, lobster rolls, and clam and scallop chowder. As you are eating your delicious food, look out at the harbor in front of you for stunning views.
Evening: Nightlife at The Landing
Once you are full, head over to The Landing for some nightlife with live music. This waterfront bar is always busy, making it a great place to grab a drink and enjoy music with a view.
Day 2: Scenic Adventures and Beachside Relaxation
Morning: Breakfast at Stoneacre Brasserie
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Stoneacre Brasserie. The menu is packed with classics like fluffy pancakes and eggs Benedict, alongside some unique dishes that will set the tone for a great day ahead. Enjoy the beautiful decor inside!
Mid-Morning: Bike Ride on Ocean Drive (or Rent a Scooter!)
After breakfast, set out to explore Newportโs stunning coastline with a bike ride along Ocean Drive. This scenic 10-mile route offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise.
Not a fan of biking? No problem! You can still take in the sights by renting one of the fun, colorful scooters available around town. My friends chose this option and they could not stop raving about how much they enjoyed zipping around in style. I personally loved the biking experience, but both options are a fantastic way to see the sights.
Be sure to make a pit stop at Goosbery Beach along the way with soft, powdery sand and a tranquil, secluded feel.
The bike ride and the beach were the highlight of my trip!
Rent both bikes or Scooters at Scooter World.
Lunch: The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn
Next up is lunch at The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn. This iconic spot is known for its beautiful oceanfront lawn filled with Adirondack chairs. I seriously cannot get over this view! It has a very classy vibe and is a perfect place to grab a seat, order a lobster roll, and soak in the views.
Afternoon: Free Time!
After a busy morning, take a moment to unwind and relax back at your accommodation.ย If you are up for more adventure, consider wandering through additional shops around town, getting an afternoon coffee at Cafe Beaucoupe, or finding a local spot to have a drink. This is a great opportunity to soak in the local atmosphere at a leisurely pace, find that perfect souvenir, or simply enjoy a quiet moment before your evening activities.
Dinner: Oysters at Benjaminโs Oyster
For dinner, make your way to Benjaminโs Oyster, where you can indulge in some of the freshest oysters in town! It is a great place to unwind after a day of exploring and enjoy a memorable meal on the final day of your 2 days in Newport.
Evening: Drinks at the Surf Shack
Cap off your Newport adventure with drinks at the Surf Shack, a fun, laid-back spot with a tiki bar vibe. Sip on tropical cocktails as you toast to a perfect weekend in this delightful seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island!
