1. Singapore is expensive
Singapore is one of the most expensive cities to live in. You will see this in the prices when traveling here. Expect to pay similar prices to a large American or European city. There are options to travel to Singapore on a budget through budget accommodations, budget-friendly foods, and free outdoor activities, but be prepared for this to not be your cheapest city to travel to.
2. Singapore’s airport is one of the best in the world
The Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) is more than just an ordinary airport. You will not be upset if you have to spend more time than needed here because there are many things to do. Make sure to visit Jewel Changi, a 130-foot (40-meter) indoor waterfall surrounded by tropical foliage. You will be truly blown away by this masterpiece. Additionally, nature lovers visit the butterfly garden and the cactus garden. For families, visit the indoor playground and the family zone. There is also an entertainment corner, with Xbox games, arcade games, and multiple movie theaters. Find all the attractions at the airport here.
3. Transportation is easy
Singaporeโs MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and bus systems can get you to almost every corner of Singapore and are very easy to navigate. Additionally, it is an extremely walkable place so make sure to take advantage of that, because you never know what you may run into. There are abundant Taxiโs as well or use Grab, an app-based cab-hailing option.
4. The temperature is consistent, youโll get sweaty and be prepared for rain
Singapore is near the equator and has a tropical climate. The temperatures are consistent all year, around 76-89 degrees Fahrenheit (24-32 degrees Celsius), with high humidity levels. You will be hot and you will sweat! Rain showers are common, but usually only last for a short duration. November – January is the Northeast Monsoon season, which brings the most precipitation, while the Southwest Monsoon season is June – September, which is less severe.
5. Singapore is multicultural
Cultural heritage is a large part of Singaporeโs identity. With Chinese, Malay, Indian, and other ethnicities, this multicultural environment is showcased in Singapore through various foods, festivals, and traditions.
6. Singapore is safe
Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world. However, use your best safety precautions and judgments while traveling here but know you can take a breath and feel safe throughout Singapore.
7. English is the primary language in Singapore
There are four official languages in Singapore. These include English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. Therefore, you can expect most locals to speak some degree of English.
8. Wifi is accessible
Expect to have access to wi-fi in many public spaces, including coffee shops, malls, and museums.
9. You can drink tap water
The water is safe to drink in Singapore. Feel free to use a refillable water bottle throughout your travels in Singapore.
10. No need to tip
Most restaurants in Singapore include a 10% service fee on the bill and so as a result, tipping is generally unnecessary. Even at less formal eateries that do not include the additional fee, it is not necessary to tip.
11. Rich culinary experience
The food in Singapore is incredible! You can find anything from world-class 5-star dining experiences to budget-friendly street food. A must is going to a Hawker Center which is an open-aired food court that consists of food stalls with diverse options.
12. Watch for Tissues on tables
Watch out for tissues set on tables in food courts, as this is how the locals like to reserve their tables while ordering food. If you see tissues on a table, make sure to find another one without items before sitting down.
13. Stand on the left
Although this is common in a few places, you will notice people standing only on the left of escalators. This allows others who are in a hurry to walk on the right past you. So make sure to follow this!
14. Singapore is clean
One of the biggest things you may notice in Singapore is the cleanliness. From streets free of litter to spotless public transportation, it is noticeable. It may be surprising for a large city, but admire it and make sure to contribute to the cleanliness.
15. be aware of Singapore’s laws
Singapore has some laws that you should know when visiting. Below is not an all-inclusive list, but some that will be helpful for you to know.
- Strict Alcohol Laws
- You are prohibited to buy alcohol or drink in public from 10:30 pm – 7 am. This does not include buying or drinking alcohol at a licensed restaurant/bar.
- Smoking is only allowed in designated areas
- No eating or drinking on public transportation
- Singapore is a very clean city and this is noticeable on public transportation. Make sure to wait until you are off public transportation to eat or drink. Additionally, Durian (a fruit with a strong smell that is popular across Asia) is banned on public transportation, even if you are just transporting it.
- No Chewing Gum
- Avoid bringing chewing gum to Singapore, as buying or importing it into the country is banned. (There are exceptions to this law if you have a medical prescription for it.) You are allowed to bring 1 or 2 packs of chewing gum as a tourist, but I recommend just leaving it at home for this trip.
- No Littering
- Do not litter in Singapore. Of course, it helps to keep the city clean but fines can be attached as well.
