Ski Mountain Spotlight: Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky, Montana

One of my favorite ski mountains, Big Sky Resort, is in Southern Montana. This expansive mountain is known for its vast terrain and spectacular views, with terrain ranging from long groomed runs to triple-black diamonds. Let’s dive into what makes Big Sky the perfect skiing destination!

How To Get To Big Sky Resort

By Air: Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), about an hour’s drive from Big Sky.

Ground Transportation from Bozeman Airport: Once you arrive at Bozeman Airport, you have a few options to get to Big Sky:

  • Rental Car: Rent a vehicle and drive to Big Sky. The drive takes approximately one hour, and the route is well-marked and scenic. (My go-to car rental is Enterprise.)
  • Shuttle Service / Private Transfers: Several shuttle companies and private car services offer transportation between Bozeman Airport and Big Sky. Reservations will be needed ahead of time, especially during peak travel times.

The Highlights Of Big Sky

Endless Terrain: With over 5,800 skiable acres, Big Sky has the largest skiing area in the United States. From groomers perfect for beginners to steep chutes and bowls that challenge even the experts, there is something for everyone. The resort’s extensive terrain ensures you will never run out of new trails to explore.

My favorite mountain area is the South Face, which consists of Shedhorn and Dakota lifts and a great mid-mountain Yurt, Shedhorn Grill.

Powder: Big Sky receives abundant snowfall each winter thanks to its high elevation and favorable weather patterns. This means you can expect powder conditions throughout the season.

Lone Peak: Lone Peak is a towering mountain that dominates the skyline at Big Sky. With an elevation of over 11,000 feet, Lone Peak offers exhilarating skiing. Big Couloir, a steep and narrow chute accessible only by hiking, is a bucket-list run for adrenaline junkies. The Loan Peak Tram can also be used to get up close to the beautiful view, and you can ride it back down if you are not up for the intense skiing it offers.

The Lone Peak Tram is an extra cost, which varies each day. There is a separate ticket for a scenic ride or if you plan to ski/snowboard down. Click here to find out the current cost and more information.

Beauty: Beyond the slopes, Big Sky offers breathtaking scenery that will leave you in awe. The snow-capped peaks and dense forests create a picturesque backdrop while skiing. Whether you are riding a chairlift or enjoying aprรจs-ski drinks you will be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Year-Round Recreation: While Big Sky is best known for its winter sports, the fun doesn’t stop when the snow melts. In the warmer months, the resort offers activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and zip-lining. No matter the season, there is always something exciting to do in Big Sky.

Some of my favorite non-skiing winter activities in the surrounding area are hiking to waterfalls in Ousel Falls Park and snowmobiling in Yellowstone National Park.

Where To Dine In Big Sky

  • Lotus Pad: Thai and Asian-inspired dishes.
  • Olive B’s Big Sky Bistro: Classic American cuisine.
  • The Cabin Bar & Grill: Fish and meat options such as Bison, Elk, Walley, and Rainbow Trout.
  • Ousel & Spur Pizza Co: Wood-Fired Pizzas.
  • Andiamo Italian Grille: Italian cuisine.
  • Everett’s 8,800: Accessed via the Ramcharger 8 chairlift with views of Lone Peak, this restaurant features upscale dining with premium steaks and fresh seafood.

Where To Stay At Big Sky Resort

There are four main areas to stay in when skiing Big Sky.

  • Mountain Village
  • Moonlight Basin
  • Spanish Peaks
  • Town Center
Mountain Village

Mountain Village is at the heart of Big Sky Resort, making it an ideal spot for first-timers. This area has easy access to ski lifts and dining. There are a variety of accommodations ranging from hotels to condos to houses, catering to a variety of preferences and budgets.

Moonlight basin

Moonlight Basin provides a more secluded experience with direct ski-in and ski-out access to Big Sky’s slopes. This area is known for its high-end lodging options, including homes and condos. Accommodations here are perfect for luxury travelers and families/groups.

Spanish Peaks

The Spanish Peaks area is known for being more exclusive with its ultra-luxury homes/townhomes and breathtaking mountain views. It is in a quiet area of the mountain but has easy access to dining, shopping, and skiing. A perfect option if you are looking for a rental home with space and luxury amenities.

Town Center

The Town Center is about a 15-minute drive to the base of Big Sky Resort, but is a good area to be close to various shopping, dining, and entertainment options. There are a variety of accommodation options from hotels, condos, or home rentals, catering to a variety of budgets and preferences.

I would recommend using Booking.com for hotels and VRBO for rental houses/condos in Big Sky Resort.
