Best Semester of College – Thailand Study Abroad Packing List

If you are studying abroad in Thailand, I want to first say YOU ARE SO LUCKY! Embarking on a study abroad journey to Thailand is an exciting chapter filled with unforgettable experiences. I studied abroad in Thailand during my junior year of college at The University of Denver and I still think about how amazing it was to this day! Now I am here to help you with a complete Thailand study abroad packing list so that you have the most amazing time! Ensuring you have the right essentials packed is key to making the most of your experience. From tropical weather considerations, classroom essentials, and weekend excursions this comprehensive Thailand Packing Guide will help you have everything you need!

How to Start Packing

Suitcase / Carry-On

Finding the suitcase that will work best for your trip to Thailand is key. You will want one large suitcase you can check at the airport to accommodate your packing essentials for the next couple of months. A large durable, wheeled duffle or hard-case suitcase are good options. Ensure this suitcase is easy enough to maneuver. However, this is just the suitcase to get you to and from your study abroad trip.

Tip: Weigh your suitcase before you travel and check the weight requirements of the airline. Make sure to leave some space for the things you buy in Thailand and want to bring back.

The other star of the show is your carry-on. This is the bag that will get you through your long flight as well as come along with you on all of your weekend excursions while you are in Thailand. Any durable backpack will work. I had a Burton backpack that I was shocked by how much it fit and I used it for all of my weekend excursions as well as my school backpack in Thailand and it is still holding up strong! Another good option is a travel backpack like this viral Amazon one or this one from Cotopaxi.

Checklist

Have a checklist! The first step in efficient packing is to create a checklist of essential items for any trip. This ensures that none of the essentials you need get missed. Then, add the Thailand-specific items you need.

Lucky for you, I have a packing list you can download here!

Tips When Packing

Consider The Weather: Thailandโ€™s weather varies across different regions and seasons. Overall, it is a tropical climate that brings very hot and humid temperatures with rain. In the dry season from November to February, there is lower humidity and less rain, while in the rainy season from June to October, there is higher humidity and more rainfall. Packing layers is always helpful no matter where you are traveling!

  • Light and Breathable Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for Thailandโ€™s tropical climate. Airy tops, loose pants, and maxi dresses/skirts are all suitable for the weather.
  • Breathable Footwear: Breathable footwear in Thailandโ€™s climate helps prevent discomfort and ensures your feet stay comfortable. Sweaty feet are not fun!
  • Rain Gear: Rain in Thailand can be unpredictable with sometimes short, but heavy rainfalls. Make sure to pack a lightweight rain jacket.
  • Sun Protection: Make sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for protection against the strong sun.

Cultural Considerations: In Thailand, you will visit temples and other religious areas where modest attire should be considered. Embrace cultural diversity with respectful attire choices in these areas.

  • Modest Attire: Pack clothing that covers shoulders and knees, such as long, breathable pants, maxi dresses, maxi skirts, t-shirts, breathable long sleeves, or a scarf/shawl.
  • Easily Removable Footwear: Pack footwear that can easily be removed when entering temples or someoneโ€™s home.

Comfortable Footwear: Make sure to pack comfortable footwear! This is important to ensure you can explore, adventure, and immerse yourself in new experiences without the discomfort of sore feet, enhancing the overall enjoyment of your trip. Pack versatile and comfortable sandals and closed-toe walking shoes.

Versatile Clothing: Choose versatile clothing pieces to maximize your outfit combinations during your trip. Mixing and matching clothing is a great way to create multiple outfits. When studying abroad in Thailand, you should be ready to go to the beach, hiking, visiting temples, and, exploring cities. Make sure your clothing options are flexible for any adventure that may come your way!

Avoid Overpacking: Avoid overpacking! This is why packing is considered an art. This one is really hard but it is beneficial to not overpack as it not only lightens your physical load but also ensures smoother travel logistics. Make sure to just bring essentials and mix and match clothing.

  • Purchase Items Upon Arrival: Donโ€™t stress and overpack! Items you forget or run out of will be able to be purchased during your time in Thailand. The malls in Thailand are huge and you will want to check them out anyways so you can pick up clothing items. Additionally, toiletries can be found at 7-Eleven which you will learn to LOVE during your study abroad in Thailand due to the snacks and convenience. The prices will likely be much cheaper than you would have paid prior to coming to Thailand as well.

Note: The only item that is harder to find in some areas of Thailand is Tampons. In Bangkok, you will not have an issue but outside of the large cities, Pads are much more common. I would recommend bringing enough for the length of your trip if you do use Tampons.

How To Organize Your Suitcase

Roll Clothes: Rolling clothes in your suitcase is a space-saving technique that minimizes wrinkles and maximizes space. This allows you to fit more items while maintaining an organized suitcase.

Packing Cubes: If you need extra help to organize your suitcase, then packing cubes are here for you! Packing cubes are organizers that help compartmentalize your items. They help separate clothing, accessories, and essentials, making packing and unpacking easier.

Dirty Laundry Bag: Bringing a laundry bag in your suitcase is a good idea as it keeps your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones, making it easier to navigate your clothing items while also maintaining your luggageโ€™s cleanliness.

Toiletries Bag: A toiletries bag is essential for keeping your personal care items organized, easily accessible, and separate from your clothing. It simplifies security checks, prevents leaks, and ensures your hygiene essentials are readily available during your travels.

Pack Essentials In Your Carry-On: Packing essentials in your carry-on bag is crucial to ensure you have easy access to necessities, especially in case of delays, lost luggage, or unexpected situations. These items include your travel documents, entertainment, water bottle, snacks, a change of clothes, and personal hygiene items to freshen up while traveling.

I love Athletaโ€™s breathable, comfortable, and stylish pants like this one and their comfortable, casual dresses.

Sandals: Sturdy sandals, like Chacos, are my favorite footwear to bring on adventurous trips or to places with extreme heat just like Thailand. These versatile and durable sandals offer comfort, support, and traction, making them perfect for exploring various terrains during your trip. Whether you are hiking, walking in water, or strolling through city streets, Chacos provide stability and protection for your feet. With adjustable straps, they provide a customized fit. Compact and individually wrapped, they easily fit in your bag, ensuring you stay clean and revitalized. Check out this one from Amazon or this option from REI.

Toilet Paper: Not every toilet you will encounter during your study abroad in Thailand will have toilet paper. It is always nice to bring some with you just in case! These wipes are a good option as well.

Health

First Aid Kit: Packing a first aid kit is a vital safety precaution for your trip. It ensures you are prepared to address minor injuries, discomfort, or unexpected health issues while traveling, providing peace of mind and allowing you to focus on enjoying your journey. Check out this one from Amazon.

Electrolytes: Packed with essential minerals, electrolyte tablets or packets help replenish electrolytes and maintain hydration levels during your travels in Thailand.
