York is a historic city in northern England known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and rich heritage. With its iconic York Minster, narrow cobblestone streets, and ancient city walls, York offers a charming blend of old-world charm and modern attractions.
While staying in Northern England, I spent a magical day exploring York and I am excited to share exactly what I did in this perfect 1-day in York itinerary!
1 Day In York Itinerary
Morning: York Minster and Tower Climb
I started my day with a visit to the iconic York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. The architecture of this building is stunning! I wandered through, amazed by the intricate stained glass windows and the history.
The highlight of my visit had to be the climb to the top of the Minster’s tower. It is a bit of a workout (275 steps, to be exact) through a narrow, winding staircase, but the panoramic views of the city from the top are worth it. From this viewpoint, the rooftops, the streets, and the sprawling countryside beyond were incredible. I highly recommend doing this activity!
Midday: Afternoon Tea at The Ivy Room and A Sweet Treat at Bettyโs
After descending from the tower, the next stop was a delicious afternoon tea experience at The Ivy Room. The Ivy Room’s chic yet cozy vibe made it the perfect spot to relax and indulge. I had the Truffle Chicken Milanese, which was so good! Others at my table ordered The Shepardโs Pie, which was also delicious! Otherwise, along with a warm cup of tea, you can opt for the tiered trays of delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and exquisite pastries.
I could not resist heading to Betty’s Cafรฉ Tea Rooms right next door for a sweet treat. This is a quintessential Yorkshire experience as this famous tea room and bakery has been serving delicious treats since 1919.ย
Afternoon: Wandering the Streets and Shops
With a happy belly, I set off to explore the rest of York. One of my favorite things to do here is simply wander the streets. The Shambles, a narrow, cobbled street lined with beautiful buildings, feels like something straight out of a Harry Potter novel. It is easy to imagine witches and wizards running through!
The city is full of quirky little shops from bookstores to boutique fashion stores and artisanal craft shops. I spent a good chunk of time popping in and out of these charming spots. You can definitely pick up a few souvenirs along the way while exploring! Once exhausted from walking, I concluded my amazing day in York.
From finding myself admiring the stunning architecture as I strolled through the cobbled streets, or in awe from the view atop the York Minster, I felt Yorkโs charm throughout the day. I hope you get to experience a day in York yourself!
