Southeast Asia Bucket List: Top Experiences You Can’t Miss

Hot air balloons during sunrise in Myanmar.

Southeast Asia will always hold a special place in my heart. I first fell in love with this part of the world when I studied abroad in Thailand, which was an experience that completely changed the way my passion for travel grew. After my program ended, I was not ready to leave just yet, so I packed a backpack and set off on a solo trip through more of the region (you can read about that adventure here). Then I still did not get enough, so I convinced my friend to join me the very next year for another trip!

So needless to say… I LOVE Southeast Asia. The culture, the people, the food, the easy travel between countries, the affordability, and the adventures all make it truly one of my favorite regions in the world.

Ultimate Southeast Asia Bucket List

Whether you are planning your first trip or your tenth, this Ultimate Southeast Asia Bucket List highlights the very best experiences across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, the Philippines, and Myanmar. I have been to all these countries, so please reach out with any questions or if you need advice!

This list is just a tiny snapshot of the iconic adventures Southeast Asia has to offer. There is truly an endless amount to see, do, eat, and experience here. Cambodia

1. Watch the Sunrise at Angkor Wat

This is one of the most iconic sunrise spots in the world. Arrive early, hire a tuk-tuk driver, and stay afterward to explore the rest of Angkor Archaeological Park, including Ta Prohm (the “Tomb Raider” temple) and Bayon.

2. Visit the Floating Villages of Tonlé Sap

Take a boat ride through Cambodia’s floating communities to experience a completely different way of life on the water.

Indonesia

3. Hike Mount Batur at Sunrise

One of Bali’s most popular adventures for a reason. An early hike leads you to sweeping views as the sun lights up the island. It is worth the climb in the dark!

4. Wander the Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Walk through the beautifully unique terraced hillsides and find the iconic Bali swings and palm trees!

5. Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Walk through an area packed with ancient temples, moss-covered statues, and lots of crazy monkeys.

Crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, and bucket-list views (and Instagram-worthy photos!) are what you will find here.

If you want an island escape with no cars, sea turtles everywhere, and crystal-blue water, then the Gili Islands are for you.

Myanmar

8. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Bagan

Floating above thousands of ancient temples with a stunning sunrise is one of the most surreal experiences in the world.

9. Explore Myanmar’s Ancient Temples

Myanmar is home to thousands of historic temples. Explore Yangon to Bagan as each site is rich with history, culture, and spiritual energy.

Thailand

10. Release a Lantern at the Yi Peng Lantern Festival (Chiang Mai)

Watching thousands of lanterns float into the sky at once is pure magic. One of the most beautiful cultural experiences in the world.

11. Island Hop

Think limestone cliffs, emerald water, and longtail boats. Popular stops: Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Maya Bay, Hong Island.

12. Go to a Full Moon Party

The full moon parties on Koh Phagnan are famous and are the ultimate beach celebration. Think neon paint, DJ sets, fire shows, and thousands of travelers dancing under the moon. It is chaotic, iconic, and an unforgettable part of the Thai backpacker scene.

13. Visit An Elephant Nature Park

A responsible elephant sanctuary where you can learn, feed, and walk with rescued elephants.

14. Explore Temples In Bangkok

Bangkok is home to some of Thailand’s most iconic temples, from the Grand Palace complex to the serene Wat Arun on the river. Visiting these sacred sites offers a glimpse into Thailand’s rich history, art, and Buddhist culture.

A classic backpacker adventure includes floating down the river surrounded by lush mountains in Vang Vieng. It is laid-back, scenic, and fun!

16. Kuang Si Falls

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia is in Luang Prabang, where there are turquoise pools you can swim in!

Malaysia

17. Visit the Petronas Twin Towers

These iconic towers dominate Kuala Lumpur’s skyline. Head to the skybridge or observation deck for amazing city views.

A rainbow staircase leading to a Hindu temple inside a dramatic limestone cave is a must-see symbol of Malaysia.

19. Wander Georgetown’s Street Art Scene

A UNESCO World Heritage area filled with murals, cafés, and amazing food in Penang.

20. Try Durian

Durian is extremely popular in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia. You will smell it before you see it. You will find it in markets, on street corners, in desserts, even on “no durian allowed” signs in hotels and trains.

Did I like it? Absolutely not. It was one of the strangest, strongest tastes (and smells!) I have ever experienced. It is definitely not for everyone, but you have to try it once, and it makes for a memorable moment.

Philippines

Palawan is extremely beautiful! Here are some highlights to experience it:
