A Ski-Lover’s 10-Day Winter Itinerary In Austria

Experience an incredible 10-day winter itinerary in Austria through enchanting landscapes and vibrant cities. From snow-capped peaks of the Austrian Alps to charming cities filled with holiday cheer, each day embraces the winter beauty!ย

This 10-day winter itinerary in Austria is focused on three main areas: Kitzbรผhel, Innsbruck, and Vienna. I chose to do my trip in that order, but you can alter it based on what works best for you. If flying to Austria, I recommend a multi-trip flight for this itinerary; I flew into Munich, Germany, and out of Vienna, Austria.

Days 1-3: Kitzbรผhel

Check out the full post regarding Everything You Need To Know About Skiing In Kitzbรผhel, Austria for complete details on getting to Kitzbรผhel, lodging, restaurants, and navigating the mountain while skiing.

The first three days of your winter itinerary in Austria will be embracing the winter in Kitzbรผhel, nestled amidst the Austrian Alps. Kitzbรผhel is an incredible winter destination, inviting ski enthusiasts from around the globe. It is known for its pristine slopes, stunning mountain views, and charming Alpine villages. This 10-day winter itinerary in Austria is dedicated to the ski-lovers, but there are other winter activities you can do around Kitzbรผhel if you are not a skier, or need a break from skiing.

Getting To Kitzbรผhel

If you are coming to Austria internationally, the easiest way to get to Kitzbรผhel is to fly to Munich International Airport (MUC) and take a train. The train from Munich to Kitzbรผhel is about 2 ยฝ hours with 2 train changes.

You can also take a train from Innsbruck (INN) and Salzburg (SZG) in Austria to Kitzbรผhel, although fewer flights come into these airports. There are direct trains from Innsbruck which take about 1 ยฝ hours, and trains with 1 stop from Salzburg which take about 2 hours.

You can also hire private transportation to take you to Kitzbรผhel, although a more expensive option. Check out Ski Lifts or Apls2Alps.

For all trains throughout Austria, check route availability and prices, and book your tickets online with OBB.

Lodging Options

There are two popular towns to stay in while skiing in Kitzbรผhel that I would recommend: Kitzbรผhel Town or Kirchberg. Both are charming, have mountain views, and easy access via free shuttles to take you skiing.

Kitzbรผhel town itself is an excellent choice if you are looking for upscale sophistication and a more luxurious experience. The cobbled streets are lined with boutique and high-end shops, cafes, and restaurants. You can find a range of accommodation options, but more luxury hotels are located here.

Kirchberg is the perfect choice if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. The village has a welcoming ambiance, with cozy inns and family-run hotels. If you stay in Kirchberg I would highly recommend staying at Hotel Alexander!

I prefer to stay in Kirchberg. It feels like the perfect Austrian ski town getaway with a small and relaxed feel, the proximity to the ski lifts via free shuttles, and the aprรจs-ski scene.

Days 1-3 In Kitzbรผhel

During your time in Kitzbรผhel, spend each day skiing (or doing an alternative winter activity) then embrace the aprรจs ski culture, and end your evening with dinner.

Alternative winter activities to check out!

Skiing

You are in Kitzbรผhuel, so letโ€™s ski! Kitzbรผhuel is known for its skiing and is one of the best winter activities! Eat breakfast (many hotels include breakfast so choose this option if possible) and then hit the slopes!

Remember to check out the detailed post about skiing in Kitzbรผhuel, but here are some key tips and things to ski, do, and eat when skiing in Kitzbรผhuel for all three days.

Getting To The Mountain: From Kircherbg, it is easiest to take the free ski bus shuttle to B2 Maierlbahn or B1 Fleckalmbaum or a little further away is D1 Penglestein (all gondolas). From Kitzbรผhel, the closest option is the A1 Hahnenkammbahn gondola.

Ski Passes: Consider purchasing an Ikon pass if you will be doing a couple of ski trips throughout the year as it is a multi-resort season pass. Otherwise, you can purchase day passes for your time in KitzSki here.

Renting Skis: If staying in Kirchberg I can recommend Sportrudi or the Intersport locations in Kitzbรผhel town. Another great option is Mobile Ski Rental Michel where you can get your ski gear conveniently delivered to you!

Check out this awesome interactive map of Kitzbรผhel!

RUNS

My favorite part of the mountain is on the Mittersill ski area towards Resterhรถhe. This area is connected to the other parts of the mountain by a large gondola (D9 3-S Bahn) that goes over a steep valley or you can access it from the base of Jochberg via the F1 Wagstรคttbahn. The gondola is a fun experience with beautiful views so I would recommend taking that way at least once. I like this area because of the open terrain and there is plenty to ski here.

HUTS

There are many lodges throughout the mountain so you can stop for food and drinks. There are a variety of small huts, cafeteria-style or sit-down options. These were some of my favorite parts of skiing in Kitzbรผhel!

The Wiener Schnitzel at Steinbergkogelhaus is great as well as the hot chocolate at Gipfel-Bar right next door. You can also enjoy one of the best views at Pinzgablick. A goulash soup is the perfect mid-mountain meal at any of the huts on the mountain!

VIEWS

The views are breathtaking throughout the mountain! Make sure to stop along your way and admire the endless peaks covered in snow.

Aprรจs Ski

Now for arguably one of the best things to do while skiing in Kitzbรผel! After each day of skiing, make sure to fit in a proper aprรจs ski!

ON THE MOUNTAIN

Any of the various huts on the mountain provide good spots to grab food and drinks. However, closer to the base of the mountain, Skihรผtte Oberkaser provides one of the best aprรจs ski atmospheres with drinks flowing, hammerschlagen, and occasional live music and DJs!

IN TOWN

Many hotels have nice spas that I would highly recommend taking advantage of. From saunas to steam showers this is one of the best things to do for your aprรจs ski.

In Kirchberg, a popular place for drinks is Bar Dreieck. This spot will be busy from right after skiing into the late hours of the evening. Stop here for a refreshing beer or Hugo Spritz (my favorite aprรจs ski drink!). There is also a stand next door to grab a delicious hot dog called Snack Dreieck.

For a nice glass of wine, right across from Bar Dreieck is Restaurant Pfeffermรผhle where you can get a drink and sit outside by warm fires for the perfect aprรจs ski environment!

Two places to aprรจs ski in Kitzbรผhel town include Franz Coffee & Wine Bar and Hutschpferd Palais.

Dinner

When you are ready for the evening meal that you are begging for after each day of skiing, here are some options!

Restaurant Pfeffermรผhle is a good restaurant in Kirchberg. I highly recommend their steaks that cook in front of you on a hot plate with various delicious sauces and your choice of potato style. They also had one of the best Hugo Spritz if youโ€™re looking for a refreshing cocktail. Additionally, check out Restaurant Kupferstubโ€™n or Pizzeria-Ristorante Nabucco.

For fine dining, Kitzbรผhel Town is the place to go. Check out Mocking das Wirtshaus, Zuma Restaraunt Kitzbรผhel, or Neuwrit Kitzbรผhel. If you are looking for something a little more casual but still good in Kitzbรผhel, check out Restaurant Zinnkrug; I recommend their goulash or Wiener Schnitzel for traditional Austrian cuisine.

Days 4-5: Innsbruck

Check out the full 1-day itinerary in Innsbruck and the complete guide to skiing at Stubai Glacier.

Innsbruck is a charming city with colorful facades, historic landmarks, and the majestic Nordkette mountain range as a backdrop. The winter season is extra magical with the snow-capped peaks and ski enthusiasts coming for epic slopes.

Getting To Innsbruck

From Kitzbรผhel, take the train to Innsbruck which takes about 1 or 1 ยฝ hours with direct or one change options. Take a train in the morning so you can get a full day in Innsbruck, then drop off your luggage at your hotel if you are not able to check in yet, and start exploring!

Check route availability and prices, and book your tickets online with OBB.

Day 1 In Innsbruck

Innsbruck is easily walkable so most of the day will be setting out and walking around the town while admiring the beautiful cobblestone streets and colorful and beautifully structured buildings.

Consider getting the SKI Plus CITY Pass. This is one up-front fee that includes your ski pass to 13 resorts close to Innsbruck, including Stubai Glacier which you will be skiing, as well as includes the Innsbruck Card, which provides entry to many of the tourist attractions in Innsbruck.

Cafรฉ

Start your day in Innsbruck at one of the many cafรฉ’s, such as Cafe Kutzung. A Latte is great to kickstart the day and I also recommend the Omlet Croissant or the Yogurt with Granola, fruit, honey, and croissant. YUM!

Inn River

For one of the most spectacular things to do in Innsbruck, walk along the Inn River to see the famous picturesque view of colorful buildings with the river flowing in front and the mountains behind. It is truly a sight that will be hard to pull away from! Walk along the river in both ways, admiring the views.

Explore Old Town

Continue walking and exploring Old Town. These are the top things to see in Old Town and are all within a short walking distance from one another. Stop at all of them, or choose what interests you most. Many can be admired from the outside, but if you want to dive deeper then go into the museums.

  • Golden Roof: One of the most famous sights in Innsbruck, is the Golden Roof. Fun fact it is actually made of Copper, not gold! But if you catch it when the sun shines on it, it is extra beautiful as it does appear gold as it glistens! You can also explore the Golden Roof Museum.
  • Innsbruck City Tower: You can climb 148 stairs to the top of the City Tower for a 360-degree view over Innsbruck!
  • Imperial Palace: This stunning palace can be admired from the outside, or you can go inside to see beautifully painted ceilings and portraits.
  • Court Church: This gotic church has 28 massive statues, tombs, and impressive organs for music lovers.
  • Maria Theresa Street: This is a great place to take a stroll and admire Innsbruck. There are many shops along the way and if you are here during the Christmas market season (~November-December) there is a beautiful Christmas market you must stop at!
  • Triumphal Arch: A beautiful arch stands at the southern end of Maria-Theresea Street, so make sure to capture a photo here!
  • Cathedral of St. James: This is a beautiful cathedral, inside and out.

Swarovski Museum

The Swarovski Museum is a perfect activity in Innsbruck, especially in the winter. Located about 30 minutes from Innsbruck, this museum is filled with art exhibitions inspired by Swarovski diamonds. When you arrive at the beautiful property, there are a few art sculptures outside, but you canโ€™t miss the large waterfall that will invite you towards it, which is also the entrance to the museum. Once inside, there are multiple rooms/exhibitions which are all inspired by a different theme! Itโ€™s a very unique art museum that I would incorporate into your winter Innsbruck itinerary.

There is a shuttle bus that goes to/from Innsbruck/Swarovski Museum five times daily. Make sure you buy the bus and museum entry tickets beforehand. They are available online, or I would recommend stopping at the Innsbruck Tourism Building earlier in the day to get one. Get on the shuttle at the main transit center – Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof.

Note that the shuttle runs every 2 ยฝ hours so be prepared to be at the museum for a while; take your time through each exhibition!

Christmas Markets

If you are lucky enough to be in Innsbruck during the Christmas Market Season (or maybe you planned your trip around it!), this is the perfect activity to add to your winter itinerary in Innsbruck! Most of the Christmas Markets in Innsbruck are in the middle of November – Christmas, but a few (Maria-Theresien Market and Hungerburg) run through about the first week in January but make sure to check specific dates here.

Innsbruck Christmas Markets:

  • Old Town Christmas Market (In front of the Golden Roof)
  • Christmas Market Maria-Theresien Street (On Maria-Theresien Street)
  • Christmas Market at Marktplatz (Market Square)
  • Panorama Christmas Market on Hungerburg (Hungerburg via the Nordkette Cable Car)
  • Christmas Market in St. Nikolaus (Hans-Brenner-Platz)

I was so excited about the Christmas Markets and they were even more magical than I thought. The joyous environment is incredible! The highlights for me were the Punch, especially in the festive mugs, and the Kรผrtล‘skalรกcs, a dough with sweet toppings such as cinnamon!

Dinner

End your day in Innsbruck with dinner. Here is a short list of restaurants to choose from.

Note that I did not include one of the most popular activities in Innsbruck, the Nordkette Cable Car. Although this is a great attraction, with a ski-heavy itinerary I don’t think the cable car is necessary as you get a similar feel and views from skiing on the mountain. However, if you do want to add this to your itinerary, I describe it in this post.

Day 2 In Innsbruck

Get ready for another ski day! Today you will ski Stubai Glacier, Austria’s largest glacier ski area. You will find yourself on pristine slopes with a backdrop of the stunning Austrian Alps. If you thought the mountain views couldn’t get any more beautiful from what you have seen so far, just wait!

Ski At Stubai Glacier

Ski Pass: If you bought the SKI Plus CITY Pass, your ski pass to Stubai Glacier will be included. Otherwise, you can easily purchase your ski pass to Stubai Glacier online and pick it up at one of the kiosks at the base of the mountain.

Renting Skis: Reserve your gear online at the Bergstation Gamsgarten Stubaier Gletscher location and pick them up in just a few minutes when you arrive. To pick up your gear, take the gondola at the base of the mountain, and the rental area is located on the bottom floor of the gondola station.

In the morning, go to the Innsbruck main train station (Innsbruck Hbf) and take Bus 590 to Stubai Glacier, which departs about every 30 minutes. Once on the bus, the scenic drive takes about 1 ยฝ hours to Stubai Glacier.

sunirise over mountains on the drive to stubai glacier
Scenic drive to Stubai Glacier from Innsbruck

The bus will drop you off at the base of the mountain (get off at the second stop, at Gamsgarten), then pick up your ticket at a kiosk, and get on the gondola. This will take you to Mittelstation Fernau where you can pick up your rental gear, if necessary, and then the mountain awaits!

Check out the full details for the map of Stubai Glacier here.

Views

The views are one of the best parts when skiing Stubai Glacier! Make sure to stop along your way and admire the endless peaks covered in snow. The skiing is epic, but the views simply cannot be overlooked! I was in awe the whole time skiing in Stubai Glacier with the breathtaking, panorama views of the snow-capped peaks. When the sun was getting lower throughout the day, it created an even more beautiful backdrop!

One of the best spots on the mountain for views is at the Top of Tyrol viewing platform at 3,210 meters. This is the highest spot on the mountain so it provides spectacular views! Access this from the top of the Schaufeljoch Gondola. Itโ€™s difficult to climb the stairs to the viewing platform in ski boats, but worth it for the view!

Runs

It is hard to choose a favorite area of Stubai Glacier, as I enjoyed all the runs I did as well as the views throughout! It is a smaller mountain, so you can check out most of it in a single day, which I would recommend, to get a taste of it all! Here are a few areas to check out though.

There is a 6-mile (10 km) run to the base of Stubai Glacier, which is the longest run on the mountain following runs 7 (blue), 14 (red), and 27 (blue). This is a fun run to bring you to the bottom station!

For experienced skiers, I would recommend checking out some of the more difficult runs off of the Daunjoch and Daunscharte lifts, including runs 21 and 22.

Restaurants

There are many places to stop for a drink or food on the mountain, including Eisgart Restaurant and Gamsgarten Restaurant. However, one of the best places to stop with a view is Jochdohle Restaurant, at the top of Stubai Glacier. I recommend the Schnitzel,  burgers, or gulaschsuppe while enjoying the spectacular view around you. It can be accessed from the Schaufeljoch gondola or the Eisjoch lift.

After your ski day is complete, take the bus back to Innsbruck and take some time to relax and wash up at your hotel.

Dinner

Once you are ready to head back out, choose another restaurant in Innsbruck to have dinner.

Days 6-10: Vienna

Check out the full Vienna itinerary.

For the final 4 days of your winter itinerary in Austria, you will be exploring Vienna! It is a magical city that combines timeless elegance with modern charm. From exploring the music scene to landmarks to cafรฉs, there is plenty to do in Vienna.

Getting To Vienna

After breakfast, take a train from Innsbruck to Vienna which is direct and takes about 4 hours.

Check route availability and prices, and book your tickets online with OBB.

Day 1 In Vienna

Walk RingstraรŸe (Vienna Ring Road)

After checking in to your hotel, start walking around Vienna’s iconic Ring Road. Walking around and admiring the architecture is one of my favorite things in Vienna! As Vienna is easy to get around whether walking or using the tram system or subways, take advantage of this and explore the sights! RingstraรŸe is a great street to walk around, with lots of notable places to stop to look at. This will allow you to get a taste of Vienna and you can dive deeper into any of these places that catch your eye extra over the next few days.

  • Vienna State Opera: A symbol of Vienna’s rich musical legacy, hosting operas, ballets, and classical concerts.
  • Hofburg: A majestic palace that houses the history of the Habsburg dynasty. With its grand halls, museums, and the Spanish Riding School, the Hofburg is a cultural and architectural gem that reflects centuries of Austrian history.
  • Museum of Fine Arts: Has an extensive collection of European art.
  • Museum of Natural History: Known for its exhibitions of minerals, fossils, and taxidermied animals.
  • The Burgtheater: With a rich history dating back to the 18th century, it remains a cultural hub for theatrics in Vienna.
  • The City Hall (“Rathaus”): This is a striking Gothic-style building! Beyond its administrative functions, it serves as a venue for cultural events, festivals, and the famous Vienna Christmas Market.
  • The Parliament: Its beautiful structure and historical significance make it a notable landmark in Vienna.

Dinner

For dinner, I recommend Lugeck for Austrian cuisine. Here you can have Wiener Schnitzel, which you must eat while you are in Vienna! I would also recommend the Vienesse-style beef in a pot or the veal goulash.

Dessert/Drinks At Cafรฉ Schwarzenberg

Cafรฉs are a large part of Viennaโ€™s culture! Coffee is known to be top-notch and many cafรฉs have an elegant feel. Most of the cafรฉs have delicious food menus and alcoholic, and non-alcoholic beverages, so donโ€™t think that you are only limited to mornings or early afternoons to visit, as many are open until midnight. For tonightโ€™s cafรฉ, go to my favorite spot for the evening which is Cafรฉ Schwarzenberg! Whether you want an evening coffee, delicious ice cream, hot chocolate, or a glass of wine, it is the perfect spot. The elegant marble throughout the cafรฉ, the waiters in suits, and the live pianist create a spectacular atmosphere!

Day 2 In Vienna

Breakfast

Have breakfast at Ulrich, which is a stylish restaurant with good breakfast options. They have a pink croissant you must order! I would also recommend the shakshuka, smashed avocado toast, ham and eggs, and the smoothies. They have a great patio for the summer as well.

Free Walking Tour

Free walking tours are one of the best things you can do in a new city! You get a great history lesson while seeing the cityโ€™s highlights in an engaging atmosphere as the tour guides are passionate, knowledgeable, and charismatic. It is also a great opportunity to meet other travelers (especially when solo traveling). Check out GuruWalk for your free walking tour in Vienna and choose the 10:30 AM tour. You will get immersed in Viennaโ€™s history while strolling through charming streets with beautiful architecture. This was a highlight of my time in Vienna!

Although โ€œfree,โ€ make sure to tip your tour guide as appropriate based on your experience!

Lunch At A Wรผrstelstand

You will find a Wรผrstelstand all over Vienna and you must give one a try! It is a traditional Austrian street food spot that serves sausage and hot dogs and will be the perfect place to stop after youโ€™re walking around from the tour. I love the hot dogs served in a large baguette but you can also get the meat cut up on a plate. The Kรคsekrainer is a good choice as itโ€™s a sausage filled with cheese. I tried a few different stands and they were all good, but you can ask your guide from the walking tour if they have a favorite!

Museum

You should check out a museum as there are countless museums throughout Vienna! Choose one that interests you most to visit. Below is a list of popular museums, or find out information about all museums in Vienna here.

Dinner

Have dinner at Bruder for Viennese cuisine with many twists! They specialize in homemade bitters, liqueurs, vinegar, pickled vegetables, and fermented drinks.

Day 3 In Vienna

Breakfast

Have breakfast at the Palmenhaus. This is an iconic building in Vienna and creates a beautiful setting as you are in a greenhouse with windows and luscious plants such as ferns and palm trees surrounding you. During a sunny day, the light comes through and itโ€™s even more beautiful. It is a unique place so sip on a cup of coffee, have a pastry and breakfast, and enjoy your time here!

I also went to the Palmenhaus for dinner and thought the dinner food was just okay and was overpriced. Iโ€™m still happy I went once, but if you do choose dinner here just know itโ€™s more for the atmosphere than the food! I would recommend coming for breakfast, or just for drinks or a snack in the evening.

Schรถnbrunn Palace

Schรถnbrunn Palace is one of the most popular attractions in Vienna. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the summer palace of the Habsburgs. As you arrive, its yellow color immediately draws you in and you will realize just how enormous and immaculate the palace is. You can walk the grounds admiring the stunning gardens and architecture, or venture inside to see the palace in more depth, learn its history, and explore the on-site museums. I truly enjoyed walking the grounds and making the hike up the hill behind the palace to explore the area from all angles. In the winter, they have a beautiful Christmas and New Yearโ€™s Market that is also worth spending time at!

You will take the tram or subway to get to the Schรถnbrunn Palace.

  • Subway: Take the U4 (in the direction of Hรผtteldorf) and get off at Schรถnbrunn
  • Tram: Take 10 or 60 and get off at Schloss Schรถnbrunn

Lunch At Naschmarkt

After the palace, navigate back to the city center and visit Naschmarkt, which is Viennaโ€™s most popular open-air market with market stalls, restaurants, and specialty food shops. It has plenty of fresh produce and international food options. It is fun to wander through the stalls filled with fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and spices as well as the food stalls and restaurants filled with international flare from Middle Eastern to Asian cuisines. On Saturdays, there is a flea market that adds an extra layer of charm offering antiques and unique treasures from glassware to clocks to trinkets. Plan to wander through the market as well as stop into one of the restaurants to eat lunch.

Christmas Markets

If you are lucky enough to be in Vienna during the Christmas Market Season (or maybe you planned your trip around it!) then you must check out some of the worldโ€™s best Christmas Markets. The markets are usually from the middle of November to Christmas, with some staying open or turning into New Yearโ€™s Markets, through the first week of January. It is easy to navigate to these markets, just check out the locations and times for Christmas Markets here .

At the Christmas Market, get a warm punch in festive mugs, eat Kรผrtล‘skalรกcs, a dough with sweet toppings such as cinnamon, or purchase Christmas ornaments and you will be sure to feel the incredible holiday spirit in Vienna. You can also go ice skating in the City Hall Square!

Dinner

For your second evening in Vienna, have dinner at Pizza Randale. The pizza here is very good and the atmosphere is lovely. You canโ€™t go wrong ordering any of the pizzas, they are all quite good!

Mozart Concert

Vienna is deeply intertwined with Mozartโ€™s life and legacy, so it is the perfect setting for attending a Mozart concert! You will experience one of Viennaโ€™s elegant concert halls creating a beautiful setting for the music masterpieces. I recommend this experience while in Vienna as it brings you back in time and is the perfect way to end an evening! Get tickets here.

Day 4 In Vienna

Breakfast

Get breakfast at Wirr. This restaurant is in a very โ€œtrendyโ€ area of Vienna, so it will be fun to check out this spot. The highlight is the โ€œNaher Ostenโ€ breakfast option, which is labneh and two poached eggs with honey and an almond-slicked sauce.

Giant Ferris Wheel

The Giant Ferris Wheel (โ€œRiesenradโ€), is located in Prater Amusement Park and offers panoramic views of Vienna and its surroundings. It is 212 feet (65 meters) high and each cabin is spacious and enclosed. This is a fun activity to see a different area of Vienna and experience a unique Ferris Wheel experience with spectacular views!

You will take the subway to get to the Giant Ferris Wheel.

  • Subway: Take the U1 or U2 and get off at Praterstern

Cafรฉ

Relax at a cafรฉ! Check out Cafรฉ Central, Cafรฉ Demel, or Cafรฉ Hawelka. At any of these, try the famous Sachetorte which is a rich chocolate cake with layers of apricot jam and a chocolate ganache topping. It is delicious!

Sachertorte

Museum

Choose one last museum to explore!

Dinner

For your dinner tonight, eat at Tachles. They are known for their Pierogi, which are Polish dumplings filled with beef, spinach, or potatoes. They also serve pasta and great cocktails!

Opera

End your evening, and sadly your 3-day Vienna trip, at the Vienna State Opera (“Wiener Staatsoper”), which encompasses Vienna’s rich cultural heritage and its love for classical music and opera. Itโ€™s luxurious inside and out and attending a performance here feels like the ultimate Vienna experience!

Day 5 In Vienna

Hallstatt

With the final day of your winter itinerary in Austria, take a day trip to Hallstatt from Vienna! This fairy tale town is the perfect day trip from Vienna. You can do this independently by taking the train (check route availability and prices and book your tickets online with OBB) or with a tour from GetYourGuide. Spend the day walking around this stunning water-front town admiring the mountains and architecture.
