The charming coastal town of Cape May, New Jersey is perfect for a weekend getaway, offering a mix of beaches and historic charm. I had the pleasure of visiting this coastal destination, guided by my friend who calls Cape May her hometown. We first met during my unforgettable study abroad experience in Thailand, proving once again how travel connects us with people and places across the globe. Thanks to her local expertise, I got to discover all the must-visit spots that make Cape May so special. So, I am now sharing them with you in this Cape May weekend itinerary to help you make the most of your time. Letโs dive into the best things to do, see, and experience over two days in Cape May!
Cape May Weekend Itinerary
Day 1: Discovering the Historic Charm
Morning
Breakfast: Start your day with a hearty breakfast at The Mad Batter, a beloved local spot known for its delicious pancakes and omelets.
Cape May Lighthouse: After you are fueled up from breakfast, make your way to the Cape May Lighthouse. Climb the 199 steps to the top for breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. The lighthouse is not only a great workout but also a fantastic spot for photos!
Afternoon
Beach: After your adrenaline is pumping from all those stairs in the lighthouse, head to Cape May Beach for some relaxation. With its soft sand and gentle waves, it is the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun. Donโt forget to bring your beach gear, sunscreen, and a good book!
Lunch: For lunch, head to The Lobster House, a Cape May staple offering fresh seafood with a waterfront view.
Historic District Stroll: Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the Historic District. Admire the beautifully preserved Victorian homes, many of which are now charming B&Bs. Donโt miss the Emlen Physick Estate, a stunning mansion that offers guided tours.
Washington Street Mall: Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the Washington Street Mall, a pedestrian-friendly area filled with unique shops and boutiques. Whether you are looking for souvenirs, local crafts, or just window shopping, this area is fun to explore.
Evening

Whale Watching: After breakfast, get ready for some adventure with a whale and dolphin watching tour on the Cape May Whale Watcher Boat. Cape May is one of the best places on the East Coast to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. This tour is so fun to be able to get out on the water and hopefully be able to see these incredible sea animals! This was one of my favorite activities in Cape May!
Relaxation at the Spa: After a day of adventure, it is time to unwind. Visit the Sea Spa at Congress Hall for a relaxing massage or facial. The spaโs serene atmosphere is the perfect place to recharge before your evening activities.
Evening
Dinner: Just outside of Cape May, in Wildwood, have dinner at Duffer’s Restaurant & Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. This is a classic American diner experience with burgers and sandwiches, and you have to get one of the largest ice creams you will ever see!
Wildwoods Boardwalk: After dinner, head over to Wildwoods Boardwalk. Stroll along this lively boardwalk lined with shops, eateries, and amusement rides. It is a perfect spot for some evening fun and people-watching as you conclude your weekend exploring Cape May.
