Telluride Ski Guide
If Telluride, Colorado is not already on your ski destination bucket list, it definitely should be (and judging by the fact that you are reading this, I think it already is!). In my personal ski ranking system, Telluride scores incredibly high, particularly for its stunning views, diverse terrain, and overall ski experience. If you are looking for a ski vacation that feels a bit more off the beaten path but delivers top-notch skiing, Telluride is the perfect spot. Here is your complete Telluride ski guide, including everything you need to know for the ultimate ski trip.
A Little Bit About Telluride
Telluride is a former mining town turned ski mountain. With its Victorian architecture and historical charm, the town itself is small but packed with character, and what makes Telluride special is that it is relatively uncrowded compared to other major ski resorts in Colorado. The vibe is laid-back, and the natural beauty of the San Juan Mountains is truly breathtaking.
Telluride’s ski resort offers over 2,000 acres of terrain, catering to all levels of skiers and snowboarders, with incredible views from all angles.
Getting To Telluride
Telluride is located deep in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, which means the journey is part of the adventure. It is not the most accessible mountain, but there are a few ways to get there, depending on how you like to travel.
Flying into Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ):
Most travelers fly into Montrose, which is about an hour and a half drive from Telluride. Montrose has a decent number of direct flights, especially during ski season, from major hubs like Denver, Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. From Montrose, you can either rent a car or take a shuttle service to your accommodation.
Driving from Denver:
If you are up for a road trip, Telluride is about a 6-hour drive from Denver. The drive takes you through incredibly scenic parts of Colorado, passing through mountain passes and charming towns like Ouray and Ridgway. While it is long, and not my personal choice to get to Telluride, the views (and budget-friendly option) may be worth it for you.
Flying Private:
Telluride also has one of the craziest airports in the country if you are flying private. Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) sits at 9,070 feet, making it the highest commercial airport in North America! It is quite the experience landing here, with jaw-dropping views of the mountains right as you touch down.
If you have the means, it’s a pretty epic way to arrive. But do know, the weather conditions have to be pristine to land here, so many private flights end up getting re-routed to Montrose. You will be able to see the landing strip from the mountain while skiing so make sure to look out for it as you cruise down the slopes!
Hitting the Slopes: Best Runs for Every Skill Level
Telluride is known for its varied terrain, and with its lift system connecting both the town and Mountain Village, you can easily ski from beginner runs to challenging bowls in no time.
For Beginners: Telluride is beginner-friendly, and The Meadows area is perfect for those just starting out. The wide-open, mellow runs offer plenty of space to practice your turns. Another good spot for beginners is Ute Park.
For Intermediates: Intermediate skiers have a ton of options here. See Forever is one of the most scenic blue runs, with panoramic views! Prospect Bowl also offers a great variety of intermediate terrain with runs that are challenging but manageable.
For Experts: Telluride’s expert terrain is where the resort really shines. Gold Hill and Palmyra Peak are no joke and will test even the most seasoned skiers. Revelation Bowl is another must-ski for experts. It is steep, often filled with fresh powder, and offers insane views that make the challenge worth it.
For a mid-mountain break, you have to check out Gorrono Ranch. Located on the slopes, this cozy, rustic lodge offers stunning views and serves up hearty meals, including burgers, BBQ, and chili. With outdoor seating, fire pits, and live music on the deck, it is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the mountain atmosphere before hitting the slopes again.

Telluride is split between its historic town and the more modern Mountain Village, offering two distinct vibes. Connecting the two is a free, scenic gondola ride, making it easy to enjoy both areas without the need for a car. Whether you prefer the vibrant energy of the town or the convenience of slope-side accommodations, Telluride gives you the option.
Town of Telluride:
The town of Telluride sits at the base of the mountain, with charming streets, Victorian architecture, and easy access to shops, restaurants, and après-ski spots. So, staying in town puts you right in the middle of the action.
Some popular spots include The Hotel Telluride and New Sheridan Hotel for a more boutique vibe, or you can go the vacation rental route with VRBO or Airbnb if you want a cozy home away from home.
Mountain Village:
Mountain Village offers more of a ski-in/ski-out experience, so if you are all about hitting the slopes first thing in the morning, or you want a larger house to rent, this is the place to be. It is quieter, more modern, and more focused on skiing, but you are just a short (and free!) gondola ride away from town.
Accommodations here range from luxury resorts like Madeline Hotel & Residences to more mid-range options like Mountain Lodge Telluride, or a ton of home rental options.
Where to Eat in Telluride
After a long day on the slopes, you definitely want to refuel at one of Telluride’s amazing restaurants. There are both fine dining and casual eateries in Telluride.
Allred’s: For my birthday celebration, I could not have gone to a better spot than Allred’s. Located at the top of the gondola, this upscale restaurant offers one of the best views I have ever experienced while dining; truly breathtaking mountain views! The menu is equally impressive, featuring locally sourced game meats like bison and elk. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just looking for an unforgettable meal, definitely check out Allred’s.
Siam: Siam offers delicious Thai cuisine in a cozy setting. Their curries and pad Thai are delicious, and the warm ambiance is perfect after a day on the slopes.
Brown Dog Pizza: In the town, Brown Dog Pizza is a Telluride favorite, especially if you are craving something casual and filling. They have Detroit-style pizza, and it is a great spot for a laid-back evening with friends or family. This place gets busy so plan ahead!
Smuggler Union Restaurant & Brewery: Smuggler’s Brewpub is known for its local craft beers along with a menu of hearty pub food like burgers, wings, and fish and chips.
Après-Ski: Best Places to Unwind
After a day on the mountain, it is time to relax and enjoy Telluride’s après-ski scene. Here are a few top spots:
Tomboy Tavern: Located in Mountain Village, Tomboy Tavern is the go-to après-ski spot. With a huge outdoor patio, fire pits, and a great beer selection, it is the perfect place to warm up after an epic day of skiing on the slopes.
The Last Dollar Saloon: The Last Dollar Saloon is a dive bar in the main town that has been a staple for years. If you are in the mood for something low-key with cheap drinks and a local vibe, this is the spot.
Telluride’s perfect combination of jaw-dropping views, challenging terrain, and charming town makes it one of the best ski resorts out there. From beginner runs to expert-level bowls, this place has it all. And with a great après-ski scene, amazing food, and unique accommodations, your trip will be great!
