2-Day Minnesota North Shore Fall Hiking Itinerary: Explore Stunning Trails and Colors

Spending a weekend hiking along Minnesotaโ€™s North Shore is an adventure you will want to repeat year after year, especially if you are lucky enough to live nearby! This 2-day Minnesota North Shore fall hiking itinerary highlights some of the regions most scenic trails. For the ultimate experience, try to plan your trip in the fall when the trees are bursting with color. While it can be tricky to time it just right, the Minnesota DNRโ€™s Fall Color Tracker is a fantastic tool I rely on every year to catch the peak season. If you cannot make it in the fall, do not worry; the North Shore is breathtaking any time of year.

Now, let’s dive into the ultimate 2-day Minnesota North Shore Fall Hiking Itineraryโ€”an adventure I have personally created and experienced and would happily repeat time and again!

Day 1: Scenic Hikes and Stunning Views Along the North Shore

Your First Hiking Stop: Discovering Jay Cooke State Park

From the Twin Cities, start the day by driving to Jay Cooke State Park, just over 2 hours. This is a great spot to stretch your legs and break up the drive.

Once you arrive, grab a $7 parking pass from the visitor center and start with an easy hike through stunning wooded landscapes. This will be your first taste of getting up close to the stunning fall colors! Follow the path to the swinging bridge, a picturesque spot where you can listen to the soothing sounds of the river below.

Once you get to the end of the bridge, head to the right and embark on the Silver Creek Trail. This 3.5-mile loop hike is relatively flat and surrounded by breathtaking views of the colorful fall foliage. Once you complete the hike, take a moment to explore the area around the swinging bridge, soaking in the beauty.

Scenic Views at Tettegouche State Park

Next, continue your journey to Tettegouche State Park, which is about an hour and a half away. On the way, make a quick stop at Palisade Head for some spectacular views of the shoreline. It is an easy spot to get out of your car, take some photos or find a rock to sit on and soak in the breathtaking scenery.

Once you arrive at Tettegouche State Park, tackle the Shovel Point Trail. This 1.2-mile out-and-back trail is relatively flat and has multiple viewpoints. When you reach the endpoint, this is definitely where you want to take a seat and stare out into the beautiful water. Watch the water glisten, which looks like an ocean, and it will be hard to peel yourself away from the view. Once you do find it time to head back, make sure to stop off at any viewpoints you may have missed.

Exploring the Majestic Waterfalls

If you are up for another hike, I would definitely recommend hiking to High Falls and Two Step Falls. This 2.8-mile out-and-back hike features some steep elevation but offers breathtaking overlooks along the way. At the peak, you will be rewarded with the sight of a magnificent waterfall. Take your time here, but when you are ready to start the descent, make sure to stop at Two Step Falls. There are many stairs to get there, (remember you have to go back up the stairs!) but it is worth it!

Relax and Have Dinner

After your hikes, return to your car and head to your hotel to check in. Relax for as long as you would like before you head out for dinner. There are limited dining options around this area, but one option is the Grand Superior Grille. After dinner, head back to your hotel for a relaxing evening and recharge for the next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Discovering More Scenic Trails and A Unique Sauna Experience

A Stunning Morning on the Bean and Bear Lake Loop

I can hardly contain my excitement about this Day 2 hike! The Bean and Bear Lake Loop is nothing short of incredible, especially if you have the privilege of experiencing it in the fall. Picture this: endless views of vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges guiding you through your path as you make your way through the stunning landscape.

Begin your journey by driving to the Bean and Bear Lake Loop Trailhead, where the adventure truly begins with a rewarding 6.5-mile hike. This moderate trail features some steep elevation gains, but every ounce of effort is more than worth it when you are met with breathtaking views at every turn. Trust me, you will want to set out early in the morning to beat the crowds!

As you hike, take your time to pause at the various viewpoints along the way as each offers a unique perspective of the incredible scenery. When you finally reach the peak, you will find a large rock that you can sit on and soak it all in. Bring a snack, kick back, and let the beauty of the surrounding nature wash over you. This is a moment you will not want to rush! Once you are recharged and taken in the spectacular sights, it is time to trek back to the trailhead.

If you are looking for the best fall hike on the Minnesota North Shore, the Bean and Bear Lake Loop is definitely it. This is an experience that will leave you in awe and make you want to come back annually.

Refueling in Two Harbors

Once you make it back to the trailhead, drive to Two Harbors to refuel. Grab some food at Madeira Bistro and then make your way over to Castle Danger Brewery and get a growler to go.

A Unique Relaxation Experience at Cedar and Stone Nordic Sauna

As you start to make your way back to the Twin Cities, you have one final stop. Drive to Cedar and Stone Nordic Sauna in Duluth for a unique sauna experience! This is such a fun activity! Whether you already love saunas or you have no experience with them, this is a must-try activity.

Reserve a private sauna session in advance to enjoy the full experience. Switch between the warm sauna and a refreshing cold plunge, whether from a bucket or a dip in Lake Superior. You will also be provided with electrolytes, hot tea, and essential oils, ensuring you leave feeling rejuvenated.

Reflecting on Your North Shore Adventure

After your relaxing sauna session, it is time to drive home, reflecting on the incredible weekend you just spent hiking the beautiful trails of the Minnesota’s North Shore.
